Ethiopian necklace composed of an Austrian Maria Theresa thaler, bakelite beads, and Venetian trade beads.
The strand alternates oval amber-toned early bakelite beads with striped spherical Venetian trade beads originating from Mediterranean commercial production. Surface wear is consistent with prolonged use.
The central pendant consists of an Austrian Maria Theresa thaler, a coin widely circulated in East Africa and the Horn of Africa as a trade currency and store of value. The coin has been pierced and mounted with an added bail.
Such assemblages belong to Ethiopian adornment practices incorporating foreign coinage, European industrial beads, and early synthetic materials within broader transcontinental trade networks.
Old mounting; later restringing possible.
