Silver pendant made from a Maria Theresa thaler converted into jewellery in the Horn of Africa.
The Austrian Maria Theresa thaler was widely used as a trade currency throughout the Red Sea region and eastern Africa. In Ethiopia and Eritrea these coins were frequently mounted as pendants and worn on necklaces or incorporated into women’s adornment.
The coin retains the characteristic designs of the thaler, showing the portrait of the empress on the obverse and the Austrian imperial eagle on the reverse. A decorative bail allows the piece to be worn as a pendant.
