Old silver amulet box ( Gau ) with ornamental silver filigree and mounted with numerous turquoise cabochons.
Traditionally, Tibetans wear Gau Boxes around their necks, and inside this precious box are placed amulets that can help cure or prevent illnesses and serve as a protective talisman. Amulet papers are usually "prescribed", made and blessed by a Lama to address specific life issues, such as health, happiness, prosperity, protection and attraction. Besides amulet papers, mantras, pictures, small Buddha statues and Tibetan medicine pills can also be placed in this box.
